Module Learning Outcomes

  1. To formalise and solve probability problems;
  2. To use the language of random variables, their expected values and their probability distributions;
  3. To understand the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics;
  4. To perform point estimation, uncertainty quantification and hypothesis testing;
  5. To understand the basics of linear regression;
  6. To start learning R as programming language for Statistics/Probability.

Module Content

  • Descriptive statistics including numerical and graphical methods;
  • Random sampling;
  • Probability Laws including independence of events, conditional probabilities, and Bayes theorem;
  • Random variables, expectation and variance;
  • Discrete random variables;
  • Continuous random variables;
  • Central limit theorem;
  • Point estimation including method of moment and maximum likelihood estimation;
  • Properties of point estimators;
  • Confidence intervals;
  • Hypothesis testing;
  • Introduction to regression.
